Student American Academy of Optometry Chapter Hosts Successful Continuing Education Event Resulting in Two Scholarships

On Saturday, August 27, 2016  the UMSL Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry sponsored a four-hour contact lens symposium presented by world class speaker, clinician and leader, Dr. Tom Quinn.  With the support and assistance of Dr. Jim Hoekel (‘94) the meeting was a success, culminating in Dr. Quinn providing a scholarship to a deserving student.  Student AAO President Taylor Dahms (’18) recalls, “The UMSL Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry was very privileged to have the help of Dr. James Hoekel to put on our first Education for Scholarship event.”

According to Dahms she feels having good speakers helps make the events more appealing, “Dr. Tom Quinn was an exceptional speaker and the event was very educational for all in attendance. He lectured on the subject of Contact Lenses and it was a treat to listen to him. It was very obvious that he is highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the field.”  The AAO chapter is excited to be able to provide two students full scholarships to attend the Academy meeting in November.  “The recipients are well deserving and two of our most involved members. This would have not been possible without the help of Dr. Hoekel and the immense generosity of Dr. Quinn. We all learned the true meaning of giving back to the profession and are inspired to help even more students in the future,” commented Dahms.

Heart of America: A Great Annual UMSL Tradition

The 56th Annual Contact Lens & Primary Care Congress presented by the Heart of America Contact Lens Society was, once again, a great success and represented a great opportunity for College of Optometry students and residents to network, present posters, receive high quality continuing education, and help as monitors and graduates to have the opportunity to see their classmates and enjoy, not only the expansive exhibit hall but also customize their education based upon the five tracks of courses given simultaneously.  The faculty included two UMSL graduates, Drs. Rebecca Wartman(‘87) and Shane Kannarr(‘00) and Assistant Dean, Dr. Ed Bennett.  Likewise, the Heart of America Board of Directors had a significant UMSL presence with Drs. Sean Mulqueeny(‘91), Wes DeRosier(‘96) and President Craig Brawley(‘01).  Dr. Delaram “Deli” Shirazian(’16), currently completing the Kansas City Veteran’s Administration Medical Center residency program, was a recipient of a $2,000 grant from
