Board of Curators Hosts Reception in New Patient Care Center

During the December 2016 University of Missouri (UM) Board of Curators meeting on the UMSL campus the Board, along with invited guests, were able to attend a reception in the Patient Care Center.
In essence, the reception brought the inception of the project to reality as Chancellor Tom George explains, “The Board of Curators were thrilled to see the new facility.  Indeed, it was at a meeting right here on our campus that they originally approved the bond issue necessary to construct the building.  They clearly saw first-hand the wisdom of their positive decision.” Having crossed all the hurdles along the way to get the new Patient Care Center built and a reality, the reception was a celebration of the completion of the long road and process.
Over 70 people attended the reception along with the curators and the UM Interim-President Middleton.  During the reception, guests were able to take a tour of the new facility from several student ambassadors and optometry staff members. As Dean Larry Davis recalls, “Friends and colleagues from UMSL had many compliments about the facility. At least one made the commitment to access services offered through the University Eye Center.” The new center offers the community a viable option for eye care and serves as a beacon for the community.
As one of the newest buildings on the campus, Chancellor George felt the Patient Care Center was an ideal location for the reception, “It is very visible on Natural Bridge Road and reinforces the partnership that the university has with the external community.  It combines education with service, as the clinic serves the needs of both our students and patients.  It reinforces the crucial roles that the College of Optometry and UMSL overall play in the region and throughout the state as part of our urban land-grant mission,” commented George.
The reception included recognition of the outgoing board members and appreciation of service by the University Interim-President Michael Middleton. Dean Larry Davis and Chancellor George also gave remarks about the new Patient Care Center and all the hard work and time invested in making the center a reality.

Heart of America: A Great Annual UMSL Tradition

The 56th Annual Contact Lens & Primary Care Congress presented by the Heart of America Contact Lens Society was, once again, a great success and represented a great opportunity for College of Optometry students and residents to network, present posters, receive high quality continuing education, and help as monitors and graduates to have the opportunity to see their classmates and enjoy, not only the expansive exhibit hall but also customize their education based upon the five tracks of courses given simultaneously.  The faculty included two UMSL graduates, Drs. Rebecca Wartman(‘87) and Shane Kannarr(‘00) and Assistant Dean, Dr. Ed Bennett.  Likewise, the Heart of America Board of Directors had a significant UMSL presence with Drs. Sean Mulqueeny(‘91), Wes DeRosier(‘96) and President Craig Brawley(‘01).  Dr. Delaram “Deli” Shirazian(’16), currently completing the Kansas City Veteran’s Administration Medical Center residency program, was a recipient of a $2,000 grant from
