Ibrahim Chosen as April Student Spotlight Winner

Every month the Office of Student Services with the College of Optometry seeks nomination from the faculty, staff, and students of the college in an effort to recognize one student who exemplifies our student body.  This month's recipient is a true reflection on what we look for in a student at UMSL College of Optometry.

The Student Spotlight for April 2015 is:
  Yousef Ibrahim (Class of 2017)

Yousef received several nominations from students, faculty, and staff for this month's recognition.  The comments shared about Yousef are indicative of the impact our students have on fellow students, prospective students and parents,  and the college as a whole. His representation of UMSL College of Optometry in many roles he serves is a true asset to the current and future students.  Yousef truly exemplifies this month's student spotlight!

Yousef is very involved at the College of Optometry and is a member of several professional organizations where he holds leadership roles, has served as CE monitor at the 2014 Optometry's Meeting and Heart of America, and he is an active student ambassador for recruitment and special events. In addition he is a current tutor and teaching assistant for the Class of 2018, and is a work study student in the office of Student Services.

In addition, Yousef was selected to be part of the group of students who attended the board of curators meeting regarding the construction of the new patient care center, member of the emerging leaders group, and was part of the groundbreaking for the new patient care center as the representative for the Class of 2017.

Yousef is currently in his second year of optometry school here at UMSL.

Here are the comments from those who nominated Yousef:

"Yousef is an example of a perfect peer! He is willing to go way and beyond to help his classmates and students from class of 2018! He is great spirited and super nice! We are lucky to have him!"

"You just can't find a person who dislikes Yousef. He's caring, considerate, and nice to everyone. He thinks of others first. He helps his classmates whenever he can. As students, our time is tightly scheduled but Yousef always finds time to volunteer and help at nearly every UMSL optometry event. He is a perfect person to serve as an ambassador to our school because he is incredibly welcoming and friendly. And to top it all off, he is really funny and a great friend."

"Yousef is the model student. He always finds the silver lining in every situation. He is one who will drive someone to think about things from a different perspective. He encourages everyone do the best they can and to be happy. He demeanor, personality, and sincerity is what him who he is. Yousef is a student who is humble and who goes above and beyond to help people when they need it. His smile and warmth is contagious and when he walks into the room, you can feel the environment change for the better. Yousef is a involved in many organizations on campus, student ambassador, tutor, and TA for the college! He doesn't need or want an award to be who he is, and that is why we are lucky to have him at UMSL!"

Congratulations Yousef on being the UMSL|Optometry April 2015 Student Spotlight winner!!!

The 56th Annual Contact Lens & Primary Care Congress presented by the Heart of America Contact Lens Society was, once again, a great success and represented a great opportunity for College of Optometry students and residents to network, present posters, receive high quality continuing education, and help as monitors and graduates to have the opportunity to see their classmates and enjoy, not only the expansive exhibit hall but also customize their education based upon the five tracks of courses given simultaneously.  The faculty included two UMSL graduates, Drs. Rebecca Wartman(‘87) and Shane Kannarr(‘00) and Assistant Dean, Dr. Ed Bennett.  Likewise, the Heart of America Board of Directors had a significant UMSL presence with Drs. Sean Mulqueeny(‘91), Wes DeRosier(‘96) and President Craig Brawley(‘01).  Dr. Delaram “Deli” Shirazian(’16), currently completing the Kansas City Veteran’s Administration Medical Center residency program, was a recipient of a $2,0...
