Celebrating 25 years of Service to UMSL-College of Optometry

Every member of a team is an important player in the success of the organization and while she isn't involved with recruiting new students, or seeing patients in the clinic you likely know her from all the photos, posters, and displays art work for the College of Optometry.

Janice White is the graphic designer for the College of Optometry and is responsible for most of the professional posters, mailings, and communications that help enhance the image of the college.

From the EyeWire publication...to the website...to the class photos...Janice is responsible. Janice is also using her creative insight to assist students in the design of posters for presentations and contests.

Assistant Dean of Student Services, Dr. Ed Bennett, is very aware of Janice's tenure at UMSL and how the College has benefited from her abilities, "Having been associated with Janice during her entire tenure at the College I can say that we have all benefited from her exceptional attitude. She is always willing to help and her innovativeness and creativity as a graphic artist and web designer are attributes that continue to benefit everyone associated with the College."

Janice exhibits a positive attitude and is always wearing a smile on her face. A major priority is ensuring that her work is superior and is truly representative of the College of Optometry's mission and vision.

White is celebrating her 25th year with the College of Optometry this month and plays important role in the college's communication process. Lorraine Simeone, Administrative Manager for the College of Optometry recognizes Janice's work within the college, "Janice has been involved with every creative design, every professional poster, every announcement/invitation for all College events, all marketing brochures and packets for Student Services, the University Eye Center and satellite locations and recently the professionally designed wall art that is now located on the third floor near Student Services and in the University Eye Center. "

Her creative and innovative spirit helps to stimulate the eyes of readers through her designs. Her attention to detail is one of her most welcomed attributes to the College of Optometry.

Heart of America: A Great Annual UMSL Tradition

The 56th Annual Contact Lens & Primary Care Congress presented by the Heart of America Contact Lens Society was, once again, a great success and represented a great opportunity for College of Optometry students and residents to network, present posters, receive high quality continuing education, and help as monitors and graduates to have the opportunity to see their classmates and enjoy, not only the expansive exhibit hall but also customize their education based upon the five tracks of courses given simultaneously. The faculty included two UMSL graduates, Drs. Rebecca Wartman(‘87) and Shane Kannarr(‘00) and Assistant Dean, Dr. Ed Bennett. Likewise, the Heart of America Board of Directors had a significant UMSL presence with Drs. Sean Mulqueeny(‘91), Wes DeRosier(‘96) and President Craig Brawley(‘01). UMSL Hosts Receptions at the Missouri Optometric Association and the American Academy of Optometry

An important part of a successful organization is to maintain engagement with our alumni as well as provide the opportunity for students and alumni to connect at various events across the state. The College of Optometry has been hosting receptions as Heart of America, Optometry’s Meeting, and most recently at the Annual Meeting of the Missouri Optometric Association (MOA) and the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO). The recent MOA meeting was in Branson, Missouri. Dean Larry Davis addressed all of the attendees with an update on the newly opened UMSL Patient Care Center. During his address, he discussed the ongoing fundraising. In addition, Director of Student and Alumni Services Nick Palisch, along with a great team of student ambassadors staffed the UMSL booth to meet with attendees. UMSL Hosts the 2017 Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators 34th Annual Educational Workshop

The UMSL College of Optometry was host to 56 contact lens educators from all of the Colleges in North America as well as 23 representatives from contact lens industry sponsors as host of the 34th Annual Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators(AOCLE) Annual Educational Workshop, held June 1 – 3. The theme of the meeting was ““Scleral Lenses: The Good, The Bad, The Technology.” Guest lecturers included renown scleral lens innovators Drs. Christine Sindt and Jason Jedlicka. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in workshops pertaining to scleral lens evaluation and fitting. A highlight of the workshop was a tour of the new UMSL Patient Care Center. The organizing committee consisted of Drs. Julie DeKinder, Vinita Henry, Ed Bennett, and Beth Henderson with Dr. DeKinder doing a wonderful job as Chair of the committee.
